About Augmented Reality
What is Augmented Reality?
Augmented reality, also known as AR, is an interactive experience with a real-world environment. The objects that we see in the real world are then enhanced or augmented, by computer-generated software. The effects can be experienced across various senses, including visual, aural, Touch, sense and smell.
AR technology is very widely integrated into many areas of everyday life, almost without us realising it and is used extensively in commercial and retail settings, integrating real or virtual objects, adding information in our field of vision.
Please see the image at the top of this page to illustrate this. If you have a particular AR app enabled on your smartphone and then point it to look down a high street, you will then see more information above each of the various shops and premises, such as the names of Restaurants, Bars, Coffee Shops, Jewellers, Clothing, Pharmacists, etc. etc.
Other well known Apps that use AR include:
- Snapchat
- Pokemon Go
- Google Glass
- Ikea Studio
